Family Ceilidh
with Whirlypit
Whirlypit is a lively new Scottish group who play arrangements of traditional tunes from around the world to create a fresh, unique sound. The band line-up consists of Rona Wilkie (fiddle, Gaelic song), Morag Brown (fiddle), Lewis Powell-Reid (accordion, bouzouki, mandolin) and Finlay Loening (guitar, mandolin).
Rona’s fiddle-playing style is rooted in the traditional music of her native Highlands, playing with Gizzenbriggs and Feis Rois from a young age. She was simultaneously taught classically, moving to Edinburgh at 16 to be trained by Angus Ramsay, and more recently has been inspired by swing violinists who have joined her on tours throughout North America. A speaker of Gaelic, Rona has sung traditional Gaelic songs from a young age.
Morag’s fiddling style has been influenced by many different musical traditions, in particular that of Shetland as well as others throughout the UK. In recent years she has taken inspiration from the fiddle music of Scandinavia, the Balkans, the Middle East and India. She enjoys to experiment with different tunings to open up the fiddle’s natural resonance. In addition to Whirlypit, Morag performs throughout the UK with Balkan band ‘Black Cat’ and Iranian/Arabic group ‘Dunya’.
Whirlypit’s multi-instrumentalist Lewis is experienced in several different styles, including Scottish, Klezmer, French, Balkan and Arabic. He is studying on the Folk and Traditional Music degree course at Newcastle University and has performed throughout the UK, Europe and Asia with various bands, including the Babylon Arabic Band, Stobo Village Ceilidh Band and Celter Schmelter.
Fin’s guitar-playing is powerful, driving, rhythmic, and influenced by contemporary Scottish accompaniment styles. He has built up an extensive repertoire of chord shapes and is wildly creative with his choice in chord patterns.
All four band members play regularly for ceilidhs throughout the UK, and Rona and Morag are experienced dance callers.
